Many Liverpool fans took to Twitter to lay into Loris Karius after his calamitous comeback in Tuesday’s 3-2 pre-season friendly win against Tranmere.

Karius, whose Champions League final horror show contributed to defeat by Real Madrid in May, marked only his second appearance since Kiev with a mistake at Prenton Park.

The 25-year-old spilled a free-kick by Oliver Norburn into the path of Johnny Smith, who reduced Liverpool’s lead to 3-1 after goals from Rafael Camacho, Sheyi Ojo and Adam Lallana had given the visitors a 3-0 interval lead.

Supporters still hurting from Karius’ awful display in Kiev were in no mood on social media to ignore the debate around his worthiness to play for the club.

COMMENTARY:

Another day, another Karius howler. It was not in front of the football-viewing world on this occasion, and in the rather more low-key setting of League Two club Tranmere in a pre-season friendly. But such is the reach of social media and modern fandom the reactions of the Liverpool faithful are a mixture of blazing anger and very dark humour. One has to search hard for anyone with anything halfway decent to say about the German goalkeeper, whose performance in Kiev in May ended all hope of the club returning to the top of European football. The spotlight is destined to be fierce whenever Karius plays this season, and the reactions are unlikely to be pleasant, either.
