West Brom are in the hunt to sign Scunthorpe United left-back Conor Townsend along another Championship duo, according to the Daily Mail.

The Baggies have joined their league rivals Hull and Ipswich to compete for the signature of the 5’5″ (source: Transfermarkt) left-sided defender, with Hull reportedly already having a £250,000 bid for the 25-year-old rejected by the League One outfit.

Townsend has emerged as one of the third tier’s most reliable left-backs, and has caught the interest of the Championship trio on the back of his performances in the 2017/2018 campaign after joining from the Tigers in 2016 on a free transfer.

Good move for West Brom?

Yes, it is a good move for the club. Boss Darren Moore is clearly looking for reinforcements in this area based on this interest, and Townsend is evidently the player to fulfil that.

He has enjoyed a successful season with Scunthorpe in League One and has since established himself as one of the most consistent left-backs in the division.

Townsend’s potential will only increase by joining a club who are one of the serious challengers for Premier League promotion.

Likely to happen?

It is difficult to tell. Townsend is the subject of a contest with several Championship clubs, so it is all just a matter of who submits the highest bid.

However, his head may be turned by the possibility of top-flight football, and West Brom may be his preferred destination as a result.

If Moore manages to secure his capture, it may just kickstart a rush of signings before the window shuts next month – but he must hurry.
