West Brom are bracing themselves for an approach from Newcastle United to sign Salomon Rondon this summer after missing out on their top striker target Alassane Plea, according to the Express and Star.

The newspaper claims via their website that Tottenham are now in pole position to sign the Nice forward with the Magpies put off by his £27million price-tag.

It is understood they will now turn their attention towards Baggies target man Rondon, who according to statistics website Spotrac earns £60,000-a-week at The Hawthorns.

The gladiatorial forward, known for his combative effort and physical strength, has made over 100 Premier League appearances for West Brom, but can leave this summer for £16.5million due to a release clause in his contract.

Good move for Newcastle?

Rondon has not been the most prolific striker at West Brom, scoring just 28 goals in 120 appearances across all competitions for the Black Country club, however he is far better than the current forward options that Rafa Benitez has at Newcastle.

The Venezuela international also fits Benitez’ system perfectly thanks to his imposing physique and hold-up play.

Rondon’s not the best in the air though and for a player of his size he should score more headers, while his ability to win aerial duels is also questionable.

For £16.5million, Newcastle would be getting themselves a forward with plenty of Premier League experience, but unfortunately, barely any Premier League goals.

Likely to happen?

Newcastle need to sign one or two new forwards this summer and it seems that they have been frustrated by the price-tags than have been quoted to them for some of their targets, like Plea.

They will eventually grow desperate and someone will trigger Rondon’s release clause.

He is understood to be happy at West Brom, but the promise of Premier League football should be enough to lure him to St James’ Park.
