Southampton are on the verge of signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jannik Vestergaard, according to ESPN.

The broadcaster claims on their website that Vestergaard, 25, has been the Saints’ number one transfer target since losing Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool in January, and they are now close to snapping him up as he is due to undergo a medical today (Monday).

It is understood that the Denmark international will become Mark Hughes’ third addition of the transfer window after already completing deals for Mohamed Elyounoussi and Stuart Armstrong.

Good move for Southampton?

Vestergaard made 34 appearances in all competitions for Monchengladbach last season, scoring three goals in the process.

According to ESPN, he is very highly-rated in Germany and it does seem as though he will be a handy addition to the Saints’ squad.

The Denmark international did not feature at the World Cup, but that does not mean that the 6ft 5in centre-back is not a good player and Saints fans should be excited about his arrival, having got a history of snapping up good defenders from Europe.

Likely to happen?

With Vestergaard due to have a medical on Monday, it’s fair to say that this deal looks almost done and Southampton should have themselves a new centre-back in no time at all.

The Denmark international has never really had any issues with injury and should pass his medical checks with flying colours.

Hughes will now be looking to continue strengthening his squad after just avoiding relegation last season.
