Rangers have ended their interest in snapping up Millwall defender Jake Cooper but are looking at another transfer target as the revolution at Ibrox continues, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The Sun writer claims on his personal Twitter account that the Championship side were looking for a hefty transfer fee from the Light Blues if they were to sign the 6’5″ (source: Transfermarkt) English colossus, and that Steven Gerrard has moved on to eye up an alternative.

The 23-year-old centre back was a mainstay for the Lions last season, making 42 appearances across all competitions and managing to net four goals along the way, but it appears he will not be joining the eight first team signings made as Gerrard looks to overhaul his squad.

Opinion

Cooper would have been an imposing presence at the heart of the Rangers defence but the Light Blues are right not to follow up their hunt if they are not able to agree a reasonable price with Millwall. Gerrard already has two new recruits – Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic – at the heart of his defence and another will be bringing in competition, rather than being a guaranteed starter in the first team. It seems as though the Gers’ transfer business is far from being completed though and the fans at Ibrox should expect to hear another name or two linked with their side through the grapevine before too long. It is an exciting time of change for the club and they got off to a winning start in their Europa League qualifier. Now there may well be more recruits to help bolster the squad and push the Gers further in the right direction.
