Rangers have opened talks with Millwall as they remain in hot pursuit of defender Jake Cooper this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims via their website that the London club are remaining reluctant to cash in on Cooper, 23, after he played such a vital role for them in the Championship last season.

It is understood that Rangers manager Steven Gerrard does have a plan B if he cannot sign Cooper, who according to Southwark News chief sports reporter John Kelly on his personal Twitter account on Thursday, is valued at over £5million.

Good move for Rangers?

Cooper was very impressive for Millwall last season when the Lions managed to not only survive their first season back in the Championship, but also launch a late bid to finish in the play-off spots.

The former England youth international made 42 appearances across all competitions for Millwall in 2017/18, scoring four goals and supplying three assists in the process.

The left-sided defender is a colossal figure in defence and is hard to deal with at set-pieces, so he would certainly be a good addition for Rangers if Gerrard wants to use a back-three system next term.

If the Gers can get him for lower than £5million it would be a very good signing.

Likely to happen?

Millwall appear to be very reluctant to sell Cooper this summer and it would be a massive shock if Rangers were able to afford over £5million for the player.

Dave King has failed to get external investment and unless high-value players are offloaded like Josh Windass and Alfredo Morelos, the Gers can kiss goodbye to their chances of signing Cooper and Gerrard will have to deploy his contingency plans.
