Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is the most likely player to sign for West Ham next, according to Football Whispers.

The football news site claims that Smalling, 28, is firmly in the running to end up at the London Stadium this summer as Manuel Pellegrini continues to add to his squad before the start of next season.

After gathering transfer rumours from across the world and rating them out of five, Football Whispers has rated the chances of Smalling being the next signing for West Ham at 3.7 out of 5.

The Daily Star reports that the former Fulham defender earns £80,000-a-week on his deal at Old Trafford.

OPINION

Smalling made 46 appearances in all competitions for Man United last season and scored four goals in the process. He gets a lot of criticism for his performances, but the England international would still be a top addition for West Ham and if Pellegrini wants one more centre-back added to his squad, then he should definitely make a move for the 28-year-old. Smalling is in the final year of his contract at Man United and should be available for quite cheap as Jose Mourinho would more than likely want to avoid losing him for free next year. The Hammers have already spent a lot this summer so if they need a cut-price deal, they should look at Smalling, who has bags of Premier League and title-winning experience and still has the ability to impress. His height and pace could be invaluable assets for West Ham boss Pellegrini in the coming seasons.
