Tottenham are in talks with attacker Erik Lamela over a new long-term deal, according to Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca di Marzio.

The reliable journalist has claimed on his personal website that Lamela, 26, could very much sign a new contract this summer, with his current £80,000a-a-week (Spotrac) agreement ending in 2020.

It is understood that both Spurs and the player are interested in agreeing a new deal, that would see his stay in North London extended until either 2021 or 2022.

Good move for Tottenham?

Lamela did not have one of the best seasons for Spurs last time out, however he had come back from a year-long spell on the sidelines with a serious hip injury, so not much was expected of him.

Many fans were mostly frustrated that he was being played over Lucas Moura, especially as his form failed to improve, however he scored two goals and supplied an assist on the last day of the season 5-4 win over Leicester, which offered some encouragement.

To stop players leaving for a low fee, Spurs are definitely right to get Lamela tied down to a new deal, however they will surely be hoping that he can improve his performances.

Likely to happen?

Sky Italy’s di Marzio rarely gets much wrong, and it appears that he has scooped up some inside information on the former Roma attacker.

It’s very likely that this is true and you can expect to see this deal get confirmed by the club soon as a way to cover up the lack of signings that have been made.
