British businesswoman Amanda Staveley still holds interest in securing a takeover of Newcastle United but that she is waiting for current owner Mike Ashley to place a sensible asking price on the club, according to journalist Lee Ryder.

The Chronicle reporter was probed over the tycoon’s interest in buying out Ashley in a live question and answer blog on the newspaper’s website (18/07, 13:16), and he insisted that after seeing an approach rebuffed over the winter, she has remained keen on doing business with the Sports Direct supremo.

Ashley has now been at the club for over a decade, and has overseen a fifth placed finish as well as two relegations during his time at the top of St James’ Park.

Opinion

Many Newcastle fans might have forgotten about Staveley despite the widely covered takeover talks back at the latter end of 2017, but it appears as though she is still waiting in the shadows to make a move. The supporters will not allow themselves to get too excited over this though, having learned their lesson during the last saga. The majority, if not all, would love to see Ashley on his way, with his penny pinching ways limiting the club’s potential and leaving manager Rafael Benitez frustrated when it comes to signing new recruits during the summer transfer window. There has not been any money spent on a transfer fees other than Martin Dubravka, who turned his loan into a full move, with Ki Sung Yeung a free signing and Kenedy a loan capture from Chelsea. Staveley might loosen the purse strings were she to arrive, but at the moment that looks unlikely.
