Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Jordan Rossiter has picked up a knock and is recovering from an ankle issue, ahead of the Europa League qualifier against Shkupi on Thursday.

Gerrard was talking in his first pre-match press conference, where he delivered the news, adding that Rossiter had been a “standout performer” in pre-season and that it was pure bad luck.

Gerrard added that Lee Wallace is also injured and won’t play a part in the vital game, while Graham Dorrans is recovering from his injury.

OPINION

Rossiter can’t catch a break. Since his move from Liverpool he’s only managed 11 games for Rangers because of injury. Bar his appearance in the last game of the season, the last time he played a competitive game was in August 2017 and just when it looked like he was going to be ready to go this season, he’s suffered another knock. The good news is that it looks like this might be a different injury to his long-term calf problems. Gerrard has said it’s a knock and that it was purely bad luck. That makes it sound like it’s nothing serious but with Rossiter you never know. Gerrard gave his former Liverpool teammate some words of encouragement when he said that he was a standout performer in pre-season, and Rangers fans have known for a long time that there’s a real player there if he can get fit. They’ll be praying now that this is nothing serious and that Rossiter can play a part in the Gerrard revolution at Ibrox next season. It could be Rossiter’s last chance to prove that he can save his Rangers career.
