Rangers have announced that promising youngster Liam Burt has signed a new contract at Ibrox.

The club announced via their official academy Twitter account that the 19-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension, tying him to the club until at least next summer.

The attacking midfielder, who is highly-rated by the Gers coaching staff, had a loan spell with Scottish Championship side Dumbarton last season where he made 19 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Burt is also a Scotland Under-21 international and has made three senior appearances for Rangers in his career so far. The Scot will be hoping to feature more regularly under Steven Gerrard next season.

OPINION

Seeing a promising youngster sign a new deal ahead of the new season is good news for new Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who will now hope that Burt can push on and stake his claim for first-team action. The midfielder is a technically gifted, attacking player who can make an impact in the senior team should he be called upon. Gerrard will have to rely on young players this season as his budget won’t be able to stretch particularly far, so it’s positive that the club have so many promising young players who are chomping at the bit to represent the club. Burt is one of a number of young players that expect to break through this season, including the likes of Greg Docherty and twins Ross and Robbie McCrorie. The new manager will be able to develop them on the training ground as the season goes on, introducing them into the first-team when he feels they’re ready.
