Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been handed a boost for the coming weeks by welcoming back a trio of senior stars, although they are all unlikely to feature against Rosenborg on Wednesday, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim that the former Liverpool boss has seen Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig return from their summer break after international duty for their respective countries, while striker Leigh Griffiths has stepped up his return from an injury layoff.

However, it appears as though Rodgers will have to make do with the same squad that saw off Rosenborg 3-1 in their first leg of their crunch Champions League qualifier, with none of the returning trio expected to make the trip to Norway for Wednesday’s showdown.

Opinion

Having the trio back in and around the squad will be massive for Rodgers and his men, who have endured a difficult time with selection in recent games. The absence of Lustig and Boyata has been felt hard but the Hoops has persevered and are on the brink of coming out the other side successfully. Griffiths meanwhile has not been missed nearly half as much as the defensive duo, for Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele have been forming quite the partnership up top. It will prove to be a tough task for the Scottish hitman to force his way back into the reckoning with the French pair in such good form, but Rodgers will not be complaining about having the striker at his disposal once again. It is a long season and rotation is to be expected, so Griffiths just needs to bide his time and wait for the chance to shine in the green and white hoops once again.
