Writing on wall for Hodson after Gerrard instruction

The Mark Warburton era at Rangers does not hold too many special memories for followers of the club.

Many of his signings flopped, particularly those in the summer of 2016, which paved the way for his engineered exit the following March and ended any hope that he would be anything other than a footnote in the storied history of the Light Blues.

Lee Hodson was signed from MK Dons two years ago amid much fanfare from Warburton, who expressed his surprise that a player he felt was good enough to play in the Premier League was available.

“I was amazed Lee was not still playing at English Championship level — or even higher,” Warburton said via the Daily Mail about the defender.

Not for the first time, the judgement of the former Brentford and Nottingham Forest manager has been left open to serious question.

Hodson has been a Rangers flop, making just 27 appearances in two seasons and doing little to suggest he could ever be anything other than a second rate back-up in the two full-back positions.

With James Tavernier the established right-back and new skipper, Declan John settling in well at left-back and Steven Gerrard in the hunt for a new left-back to replace ex-captain Lee Wallace, the writing is firmly on the wall for Hodson.

The Scottish Sun claim he has been told to find a new club by Gerrard after becoming surplus to requirements in the new era.

The 26-year-old was not involved as Rangers progressed through to the next stage of Europa League qualification on Tuesday night and is likely to have played his last game for the club.

With a year remaining on his contract, it is said the Gers top brass are even willing to hand him a pay-off to get him off the books.

Warburton, it appears, got another deal wrong.
