Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur has leapfrogged several big names to be the most likely player to be the next Celtic signing, according to Football Whispers.

The football site claim the Scotland international, 30, could be set to join Brendan Rodgers’ side before the transfer window shuts next month.

Football Whispers, which gathers all transfer rumours across the globe and calculates the likelihood of them happening, rates it 3.8 out of 5 that McArthur will join Celtic, with five the highest possible ranking and meaning it is a certainty.

He heads the rankings ahead of Liverpool striker Danny Ings (3.1) and West Brom player James Morrison (3.0) after being behind the pair last week.

Good move for Celtic?

Yes, definitely. McArthur is a proven performer at Premier League level and was a key man for Palace last season as they fought back from a terrible start to the season to comfortably secure top-flight survival. The 32-times Scotland international started 27 of the London club’s 38 league games and even weighed in with five goals, and seven in all competitions. His pedigree, experience and class would certainly benefit Celtic, both in domestic and European competition, providing cover and competition for central midfield pair Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham. Celtic are in need of more central midfield quality after selling Stuart Armstrong for around £7million last month.

Likely to happen?

Given McArthur’s Scottish roots and his contract situation – he has entered the final two years of his Palace deal – it should not be ruled out, although Celtic may have to pay big money to get a player who joined from Wigan Athletic four years ago for a fee of £8million.
