Rangers must attempt to sign centre-forward Adam Armstrong from Newcastle United this summer after it was reported that the Premier League club are trying to offload the 21-year-old.

According to the Sun, Newcastle want to sell Armstrong on a permanent basis for a fee of £3million.

It is understood that several Championship clubs have taken an interest in the England Under-21 international, who has spent the last three seasons out on loan at four clubs.

Rangers are currently in desperate need of someone to spearhead their attack and Steven Gerrard should look to pull off a genius move to sign the St James’ Park outcast before the upcoming Scottish Premiership season kicks off.

The Light Blues’ 0-0 draw with Macedonian minnows Shkupi on Tuesday night highlighted the need for the club to sign a new striker.

Alfredo Morelos was in horrific form while Umar Sadiq is only at Ibrox on a loan deal, so it would be a good idea to get in a third forward but on a permanent deal.

Armstrong, at £3million, is not only affordable, but also a proven source of goals who is only going to get better and better as the seasons go by.

Last season he was on loan at both Bolton in the Championship, where he failed to get much game-time in his preferred striker position, before he was sent to Blackburn in January and helped them win promotion from League One, scoring nine goals in 21 appearances.

He is steadily becoming a more and more prolific forward and he should be someone who can provide solid back up to the likes of Morelos and Sadiq over the next season, before becoming a first team regular and really making the No 9 spot his own.

Rangers have had some poor signings from Newcastle in the past, but Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen simply cannot pass up on the opportunity to sign Armstrong after this latest development on the players future at St James’ Park.
