West Ham remain in the hunt to sign Swansea’s Alfie Mawson, but will face competition to land his signature with Burnley locked in talks with the Championship club, according to Wales Online.

The outlet claimed on their website that the two Premier League clubs remain interested in luring Mawson from Swansea, who suffered relegation to the Championship last season.

Despite an overhaul of new signings so far, Mawson was a transfer target for West Ham in January but saw their offer for the 24-year-old turned down.

Mawson, called up to the England squad in March this year, has expressed his desire to continue playing in the Premier League and is also wanted by Burnley.

Good move for West Ham?

If Manuel Pellegrini can attract Mawson to the London Stadium, it will be a great move for the Hammers. Although Swansea were relegated this year, Mawson was one of few bright sparks and deserves to be playing in the Premier League next year.

At the age of 24, West Ham would be an ideal club to continue his growth as a player and would relish the opportunity in playing with more talented players at West Ham. Swansea will be seeking over £20 million for Mawson and, with the uncertainty of signing Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, could be tempted into bringing a defender who will be desperate to play in the top flight.

Likely to happen?

West Ham face tough opposition in Burnley, who have an advantage over West Ham in offering Mawson European football.

However, turning down a move to West Ham is no easy feat as Mawson would have an opportunity of working with a Premier League winning manager in Manuel Pellegrini.

The Chilean boss is creating a great project and Mawson could be another important piece to the jigsaw in order for the Hammers to endure a successful season next year.
