West Ham are chasing a swoop for Russian centre back Ilya Kutepov as a number of European sides look to sign the 24-year-old, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The Italian publication, as translated and relayed by reliable news source Sport Witness, claim in their print edition on Wednesday (04/07) that the Irons are joined by the likes of Sassuolo and Borussia Dortmund in plotting a move for the 6’3″ colossus, who is currently starring for his country as they host the World Cup.

The Spartak Moscow defender has been an ever present for Russia as they have made their way to the quarter finals, playing every minute of their four games so far, while he made 27 appearances for his club across all competitions last season.

Good move for West Ham?

The Hammers certainly need to be looking at bringing in some more defensive reinforcements, despite having signed Issa Diop earlier in the summer, and Kutepov has the physical presence to be a dominant force at the back.

He has impressed in Russian colours this summer, keeping the likes of Diego Costa and Mohamed Salah quiet during his country’s clashes with Spain and Egypt respectively, and will be hoping that he can replicate his display against Croatia in the quarter finals.

Depending on the price tag, this could be a very smart move by West Ham.

Likely to happen?

It is all a bit up in the air at the moment and it is hard to judge whether West Ham’s interest is genuine or whether it is just rumours.

He fits the bill of what they need, but really lacks the experience that they would be expected to be looking for ahead of the new season.

It is a possibility, but it must be taken with a pinch of salt.
