COMMENTARY:
One thing is for sure. Despite Alderweireld rejecting a new Spurs deal earlier this year amid widespread reports he was holding out for a bigger pay deal and that he is likely to head through the departure door this summer, he remains an immensely popular player with fans. Since signing from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015, the centre-back has been a consistently outstanding performer even though his last campaign was a write-off after breaking down with a hamstring injury in November. Mauricio Pochettino froze him out for most of the second half of the campaign amid the contract dispute but most supporters still regard him as a key man. They’re desperate for him to stay and remain hopeful an agreement can still be secured with the club.
