Erik Lamela has agreed the terms of a new Tottenham contract, according to a picture published on Gianluca Di Marzio’s website.

The Sky Sports Italy journalist’s report shows the Argentina international, 26, holding aloft a signed Spurs agreement immediately after penning terms.

Di Marzio claims the deal was finalised today (Friday) and will run for four years until the summer of 2022.

OPINION

Spurs have become known in recent years for agreeing a flurry of player contracts at the same time. Images of Mauricio Pochettino with his arm around a player after penning terms have become commonplace and very popular with supporters. Lamela is certainly a popular figure with a vast number of Tottenham fans, but he also polarises opinions. Some adore his work ethic, ability to carry the ball long distances and create space against organised defences. His goals and assists record is also better than some give him credit for (23 goals and 38 assists from 154 Spurs appearances). Others compare him disparagingly to Dele Alli, Son Heung-Min and Christian Eriksen, fellow attacking midfielders whose stats are on a completely different level. Fair enough, but they are different players. Lamela’s left-footedness is also useful, as is his willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good of the team.
