Southampton will be announcing the capture of powerhouse defender Jannik Vestergaard in the next 24 hours after the Borussia Monchengladbach star passed a medical, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim on their official Twitter account, as well as their website’s transfer centre (12/07, 16:03), that the 6’5″ (source: Transfermarkt) colossus is now one step closer to becoming a Saints player for a fee of £18million after this key development, with an official announcement hours away.

The 25-year-old Danish international has 185 Bundesliga appearances under his belt during spells at Hoffenheim and Monchengladbach, while last season saw him turn out a total of 34 times across all competitions for his current club.

Opinion

Vestergaard will no doubt be an imposing presence in both boxes when he turns out for Southampton next season, and Premier League strikers will have a fight on their hands to try and get the better of the Danish giant. A fee of £18million is not unreasonable for a player of his experience, and if he can tighten up what was a leaky backline then he will be worth the money. Of course, not everyone is able to translate their form from overseas in the Premier League, and Vestergaard might have to get used to the cut throat pace of England’s top flight before he can consider himself settled in. He should know what to expect from English sides though, having come up against Manchester City in the Champions League back in 2016. This could prove to be one of Southampton’s most important signings all summer, and they will be hoping he can be the man who can help the club avoid another relegation battle in the upcoming campaign.
