While managers as experienced as Rafael Benitez might be loathed to bend to the demands of players, sometimes it is necessary for the good of the club – and that is currently the case at Newcastle United.

Make no mistake, no player is bigger than the Magpies, and anyone who thinks they are should be ready to head out of the exit door at St James’ Park.

Still, sometimes players are simply looking out for the good of their own careers, and that is certainly the case of powerhouse defender Chancel Mbemba.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international was cast out as a first team choice by Benitez last season and featured in just a handful of games – so it should come as no surprise to see him linked with an exit from the club this summer.

Portuguese outlet Record claim that the centre back has his heart set on a move to title winners Porto, and that he is desperate for Newcastle to back down when it comes to their demands to try and seal a deal.

While Benitez, as well as owner Mike Ashley, will not want to let Mbemba leave for less than their valuation, bending to his demands is actually in the best interests of the club right now.

He obviously has no future on Tyneside and a sale is an inevitability, but waiting around for the right price is only limiting their own spending power, for sales will drive the Magpies’ own recruitment.

Keeping Mbemba means missing out on potential targets, and that is the last thing Newcastle need.

Selling up, even if it is slightly below their asking price, brings in that immediate influx of cash and gives Benitez the chance to strengthen the side – and as such meeting Mbemba’s request is an absolute must.
