Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu is being lined up for a permanent exit from the club by Premier League rivals Huddersfield Town this summer, according to Ghana Soccernet.

The football news website claim that the winger, who arrived at St James’ Park two years ago on an initial loan deal from Chelsea, is eyed by the Terriers to help bolster their attacking line up.

It is stated that Huddersfield boss David Wagner is a big fan of the Ghanaian speed demon’s talents and qualities, with Atsu having made 29 appearances across all competitions last season, with injury cutting his season short.

Opinion

Atsu has fallen away from the public eye as he recovers from his injury blow, and so there might well have been a few of the Toon Army who forgot that he was still part of their squad. He was very much left as second choice behind the likes of Matt Ritchie and Kenedy after the Brazilian’s arrival in January, and with the Chelsea man back at St James’ Park on a season-long loan move, Atsu’s chances of game time are going to be even more limited. As such, a move might be best for his career, while Newcastle could use whatever funds are raised from his sale to help keep bringing new signings through the door. This one does not seem out of the realms of possibility, but there might well be some trepidation about letting one of their players go to a top flight rival. With just over a week until the transfer window slams shut, this one needs to accelerate if anything is going to happen.
