Newcastle United are lining up a shock move to bring back Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum to St James’ Park, according to Takvim.

The Turkish newspaper reports on their website that United have made an offer to bring back the 27-year-old Dutch interntional to Tyneside, two years after he made the move to Anfield for a fee of £25 million.

Wijnaldum spent just one season at St James’ Park as he was part of the team which were relegated from the Premier League and into the Championship, and considering the price the Reds spent on his capture in 2016, it would be a huge surprise to see the Magpies secure his return.

Good move for Newcastle?

Yes, definitely. There is a reason why United sold Wijnaldum for £25 million – but bringing him back may mean they will have to pay around the same fee they sold him for.

The Holland international netted 11 goals for the Toon in the season before he left for Liverpool, which is a promising goal tally for a central midfielder, and Benitez would want to utilise this in his team once again.

His signing would help to maintain the faith that the supporters already have in their Spanish manager.

Likely to happen?

Yes, it does seem likely. The reports claim that Newcastle have already made an offer for Wijnaldum, so the transfer should progress quite quickly.

He does not have a long-term future at Liverpool anymore following the new arrivals, so there is no better time for Wijnaldum to hang up his boots at Anfield and move to Newcastle, where he is almost certainly guaranteed first-team football.

If the reports are accurate – and they should always be taken with a pinch of salt – then fans may see Wijnaldum in a black and white shirt very soon.
