Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has turned down a move to Everton, according to The Times.

The outlet claims that the 23-year-old has declined the opportunity to move to Goodison Park this summer, despite being made available for transfer this summer by United manager Jose Mourinho.

The report reveals that Marco Silva is attempting to rebuild his Toffees squad and lower the average age of the team, which is why potential world-class talent Shaw was the perfect target.

It is understood that the Englishman is refusing to be sold this summer and is instead looking to leave on a free transfer next summer, as he’s only got a year remaining on his Old Trafford contract.

OPINION

It’s a shame to see Luke Shaw’s career stagnate in such an extreme fashion. The left-back was one of the most highly-rated youngsters in the country when he burst onto the scene at Southampton. The £34million big-money move to Manchester United was too hard to turn down but in hindsight, he would have been much better off staying at St. Mary’s and playing regular football. The way United manager Jose Mourinho has treated the 23-year-old has been disgusting at times, with the defender having had nowhere near enough first-team football over the last few years. Shaw is still young enough, he can still fulfil his potential and become one of the best left-backs in world football, but he needs a fresh start. Everton is as good a place as any, so it seems strange that he would turn down a move to Marco Silva’s side. Maybe he wants to give it one last go before weighing up his options next summer, if first-team football is hard to come by again this season.
