Manchester City have moved closer to completing the signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The outlet claim that Napoli have completed the signing of Fabian from Real Betis, for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £26million, who is widely considered to be Jorginho’s replacement at the Italian club.

The report suggests that this paves the way for City to complete the signing of the Italian midfielder, who is set to cost around £43million plus add-ons and will reportedly sign a five-year contract with the club.

The 26-year-old is a technically gifted, midfield playmaker who sits in front of the back-four and orchestrates attacks from deep positions.

He made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Italian side last season, scoring four and providing four assists, as Napoli finished second in Serie A behind Juventus (TransferMarkt).

Good signing for Manchester City?

This is one area of the pitch that City have been needing to strengthen for some time. They relied so much on Fernandinho last season, who does the defensive midfield role so well, but when he wasn’t available they struggled in his absence. The possible arrival of Jorginho will give them even more creativity and technical skill in midfield, he’s one of the best in the world in that position and Pep Guardiola will be delighted.

Likely to happen?

With Napoli’s purchase of Fabian from Real Betis, it looks almost certain that Jorginho will become a Manchester City player imminently. The fee looks to have already been agreed and it’s a very reasonable one at a reported £43million, it’s also likely that personal terms between the two parties have been ironed out over the last few days. Man City fans shouldn’t be surprised to see this be confirmed over the next 48 hours at the most.
