Everton are joined by Premier League rivals West Ham in plotting a swoop for Augsburg centre back Martin Hinteregger this summer, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim that the Toffees are eyeing up the 25-year-old in a bid to bolster the heart of their defence, with the roles currently filled by the ageing Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, as well as Michael Keane, who was unconvincing in his first season at Goodison Park.

It is stated that the 31 cap Austrian international has a price tag of just £13million on his head and that despite reported interest from Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan, the defender is desperate to prove himself in England’s top flight instead.

Good move for Everton?

Absolutely, for the heart of their defence is by far and away their biggest weakness heading into the new season.

Marco Silva has a wealth of options running through his squad but the centre back role needs attention, and it would be no surprise if the new boss chose to bring in at least two new recruits to bolster the position.

Hinteregger is a proven talent on the domestic and international stage, and while he might not have the experience of the Premier League, he has been playing across top flight divisions in Europe for most of his career.

At £13million, it is not a massive outlay either, and could prove a great value for money deal.

Likely to happen?

While West Ham might be chasing his capture too, the Irons have seen two new additions at centre back, and so they are unlikely to push too hard if the transfer battle heats up.

Inter Milan could pose a threat, but if Hinteregger really wants to prove himself in England, then Everton must be favourites.

Within budget and a talented player, Silva could be onto a top move here.
