Chelsea’s forgotten man David Luiz has pledged his future to the club after a season in which he barely featured under Antonio Conte.

The Brazilian was a mainstay of the Blues team that won the Premier League title in 2016-17, but was left out in the cold last campaign after a falling out with former manager Conte.

But with Maurizio Sarri now in charge at Stamford Bridge, Luiz is eager to stay at the club: “When I took my decision to come back here from Paris it was to win the Premier League and to do something again with Chelsea. I came back to stay here,” he told the Telegraph.

The 31-year-old also had his say on the new Blues boss’s approach: “I love this philosophy,” he said. “We play high, with a lot of possession of the ball in a technical way.

“He’s trying to help us every single day, double sessions, to learn his philosophy quickly.”

OPINION

David Luiz is one of the most polarising players in world football today. So for every Chelsea fan excited by this news, there’ll be another who is dismayed by it. The fact remains that the Brazilian had the best season of his career when the Blues won the title in 2016-17, even making it into the Premier League Team of the Season. For him to be so callously thrown aside by Conte last year was surprising, but perhaps indicative of the ruthlessness for which the Italian was shown the door at Stamford Bridge this summer. Under Sarri, Luiz has been welcomed back into the fold, playing in both pre season games under the former Napoli boss thus far. Whether the 31-year-old will be able to replicate his title-winning form this campaign remains to be seen, but for now it appears the former Paris Saint-Germain star is set to stay in South West London.
