Chelsea face a fierce head-to-head battle with Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain to sign AC Milan centre-back Leonardo Bonucci this summer, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The reputable Italian sports newspaper reports on their website that the Blues now face stiff competition to land the 6’2″ (source: Transfermarkt) defensive colossus, as they look to take advantage of the Serie A outfit’s financial situation.

The 31-year-old defender only joined AC Milan last summer after impressing at Italian rivals Juventus, but he has reportedly interested Chelsea and PSG, with his current club said to be looking at balancing the books by offloading him and his significant wage.

Good move for Chelsea?

Yes, definitely. Bonucci is a tall, robust defender who would fit in perfectly to Chelsea’s central defence – however, his signing could spell the end for Gary Cahill after the Blues splashed out on another centre-back this summer.

He is a vastly experienced defender at the top-level, having made his debut for Italy in 2010 as well as playing for Juventus for seven years, and would bring some much needed know-how to a Chelsea back line who looked leaky last season.

Likely to happen?

It is possible. Chelsea do however face very fierce competition from PSG, who would be willing to enter a bidding war for Bonucci if necessary.

PSG would be happy to pay a high fee for Bonucci, which has been demonstrated by their excessive fees they have paid for players in the past.

It does remain to be seen where Bonucci will end up going, as both clubs would very attractive prospects indeed for any player.
