There must be very few football fans out there who can say that Steven Gerrard has not improved the Rangers squad after his arrival, while many would say he has had an incredible impact at Ibrox already.

After finishing third in the Premiership, Gerrard has undertaken a massive overhaul of both the backroom staff and the first team squad over the past two months, which has seen a number of incomings and exits through the door in Glasgow.

However, as confirmed by the former Liverpool man himself, the search for signings is not over, revealing to the Scottish Sun that a centre back was still a priority before the transfer window slams shut, stating: “We have loads of targets that we have been monitoring. I need a centre-half and a striker. Am I hopeful before Sunday? I hope it is tomorrow. I’m in a rush.”

However, it looks as though another potential target has fallen through in the shape of Bolton Wanderers’ Mark Beevers, who the Express had named as a prospective signing after a failed move for Jake Cooper from Millwall.

The Bolton News state that Trotters chairman Ken Anderson has rebuffed any move for the 28-year-old powerhouse and that the Championship side will not be selling up after his impressive performances last season, leaving Gerrard in serious trouble.

Failure to bring in another centre back, despite already having Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson on the books, would be a disaster for the Gers, who need a squad full of quality if they are to be competitive.

Injury or suspension brings young Ross McCrorie into the line up, but beyond that there is not a single recognised senior centre back to call upon – and that is not a situation Gerrard wants to find himself in.

A new defender is of paramount importance, but another blow leaves the Light Blues scrambling for options.
