Everton are planning a “shock” £18million bid for exciting Uruguay international speed machine Diego Laxalt, according to the Sun.

The report claims that they’re going to turn their attention to the 25-year-old left-back after missing out on Celtic’s Kieran Tierney.

However, they will also face Premier League competition for the versatile 5ft 10in star from Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.

Good move for Everton?

Everton only have one recognised left-back, Leighton Baines and he’s 33. Laxalt had an impressive World Cup for Uruguay, playing in their last four games, and his pace and versatility makes him an even more impressive target. He moved from Inter to Genoa two years ago for just over £5million but will cost Everton over triple that now thanks to his exploits in Russia and the fact that he’s still got four years left on his contract. He’s spent the last six seasons in Serie A, playing 32 league games last season for Genoa, scoring three goals and registering three assists from midfield, and Everton could use that experience at Goodison. He would be a good buy and his style of play should suit the Premier League. The Sun call it a “shock” move, we think it would be a good one.

Likely to happen?

Laxalt must be tempted by a move to the Premier League after his World Cup, but Everton must move fast if they want him to come to Goodison this summer. He’s been linked with a move to a whole host of clubs since Uruguay’s World Cup display – with their defence at the heart of this. Benfica, Galatasaray, Wolfsburg and Valencia have all been linked with Laxalt, along with the Premier League clubs in the Sun’s report. It means Everton will have their work cut out but they can afford him, can afford his wages, and are crying out for a player with his pace and persistence.
