Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has been told that he is not in Steven Gerrard’s immediate first-team plans and will be allowed to leave Ibrox on loan in the coming weeks, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims via their website that Docherty, 21, is attracting attention from English clubs and that a move to League One south of the border is an option for the former Hamilton star, whose future at Ibrox has now been plunged into doubt.

Docherty joined the Gers for £600,000 in January and has since made 14 appearances across all competitions for the club, amounting to £43,000 for every game he has played.

Good move for Rangers?

Docherty has clearly dropped down the pecking order since Gerrard was hired as Rangers manager, which is a real shame because he looked promising in his appearances last term under Graeme Murty.

The Scotland Under-21 international still has a lot of time to improve himself, and maybe a loan move to England will help him in the long-run to establish himself as a first team mainstay at the club he has supported all his life.

Rangers have too many central midfield options at the moment, so it makes most sense to let Docherty leave on loan rather than making any irreversible decisions to let older players leave Glasgow on a permanent basis.

Likely to happen?

The Daily Record seems pretty certain that Docherty will be loaned out, and it makes a lot of sense given the fact that the midfielder has been an unused substitute in the two Europa League qualifier games against Shkupi.

English clubs will have seem the 21-year-old played well last season under tough circumstances, so it should not be hard to get them offering to take him on loan before the transfer window slams shut.
