Swansea City have completed the signing of former Real Madrid academy player Jordi Govea, the club has confirmed.

The Swans announced the news on their official Twitter account on Friday afternoon, revealing that the defender has agreed terms for a three-year deal at the Liberty Stadium.

The 19-year-old joined Real Madrid’s academy in 2011, and will be teaming up with the Swans under-23 side at the Liberty Stadium following his move.

The left-back is eligible to play for either Ecuador or Spain, and will finalise his move to South Wales subject to international clearance.

OPINION

This is an interesting move for the recently relegated Swans, as inconsistencies in the defence were a massive causal factor in the Welsh giant’s failures last season. Govea has all the signs that he can develop into a quality player, with lots of pace and natural ability on the ball. It seems that the Swans are contemplating their future as things stand, as this acquisition does not seem to be one of an immediate impact given the players age.  The decreased standard of opposition that Swansea will face this season in England’s second division will also go so far as to aid in the development of Govea, as more first-team opportunities will befall the former Real Madrid man at this current standard. Swansea fans must be happy to see that the clubs bosses are not exhausting the financial resources to bring in quality players, as was evidenced by Aston Villa spending big to attempt a swift return to the Premier League has actually hindered the club greatly. Swansea are not panicking, and this could turn out to be a rather nice addition in the years to come, if the player is afforded the correct opportunities to be allowed to develop.
