Leeds United are set to seal a “major coup” to sign Derby forward Matej Vydra, according to The Sun.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Czech is in talks for a £40,000-a-week contract at Elland Road, with the Rams prepared to let their top goalscorer leave.

Vydra netted 21 times for Derby last season and has been a Leeds target for weeks with only failed terms causing the deal to freeze.

However, Derby manager Frank Lampard is eager for the sale to go ahead in order to send an improved bid to sign Ipswich’s top goalscorer Martyn Waghorn.

Good move for Leeds?

Leeds need a goalscorer that can guarantee 15 goals next season and Vydra has shown at Derby of his capabilities in front of goal.

Vydra was the Championship’s top goalscorer last season and scored a goal every 134 minutes.

In comparison, Leeds’ Kemar Roofe and Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored a combined total of 21 which highlights the importance of the Czech and how he could be a significant difference in Leeds’ season.

Likely to happen?

Derby boss Frank Lampard remains interested in Ipswich’s Martyn Waghorn but has to sell Vydra in order to sign Waghorn.

Vydra is a proven striker in the second tier and any club would be delighted to have the Czech in their squad.

His wage of £40,000-a-week is very high but without a prolific goalscorer, Leeds will be unlikely to challenge for a play-off spot so they would be foolish to not seal a deal for him.
