Everton scouts will surely be watching the World Cup this summer with huge interest and waiting to see if anything breakthrough stars emerge.

Uruguay knocked Portugal out of the World Cup in the last 16 on Saturday night with a thrilling 2-1 win, with centre-forward Edinson Cavani scoring both goals in heroic fashion.

The South American side have progressed to the quarter-finals to set-up a tie with France and they are proving to be defensively resilient, as a Pepe header for Portugal is the only goal they have conceded so far in the tournament.

One of Uruguay’s stand out players at the weekend was defender Diego Laxalt, who turned in a masterclass at left-back.

Everton should be straight on the phone trying to negotiate a deal with Italian club Genoa for his signature and he is exactly the type of player they are crying out for.

Laxalt usually plays as a left-winger at club level, but looked like a world beater at left-back for Uruguay and is part of a sublime back four.

The left-sided flyer showed brilliant defensive discipline by being extremely difficult to beat one-on-one and he also possesses an attacking threat.

His pace and resilience makes him a perfect fit for a Premier League side in the future, which is why Everton should consider a move immediately.

The 25-year-old is likely to be an in-demand talent after a stunning World Cup, but he looks like someone that could be the perfect predecessor to Leighton Baines at Goodison Park.
