Wolves are not wasting time this summer in trying to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the Premier League after it was reported that a £35.2million bid was tabled for Valencia right-back Joao Cancelo.

Sky Sports Italy reporter Fabrizio Romano has claimed via his personal Twitter account that the West Midlands club is in talks with Cancelo, 24, after submitting a bid to La Liga side Valencia.

Cancelo has been out on loan at Inter Milan this season, where he has been in dazzling form on the right-side of the pitch where he can play at both right-back, wing-back or further forward.

He made 28 appearances in all competitions for Inter, scoring one goal and supplying four assists in the process.

The Portugal international is a very similar player to what Wolves have already got in Matt Doherty, however the difference in quality between the two is massive and that surely means that the writing is on the wall for the 26-year-old Molineux star.

Doherty impressed this season as Wolves won the Championship.

He scored four goals and supplied five assists in 47 appearances across all competitions for Wanderers as he made the right flank his own in Nuno Espirito Santo’s system.

However the bid to sign Cancelo now means that Doherty’s role at Molineux may diminish and it could lead to him leaving this summer.

The Ireland international’s form last season should see him get plenty of first team action, but it just will not be at Molineux and he should think about leaving.

There will surely be top-end Championship clubs or Premier League teams with less money to burn that would be willing to pick him up.
