Newcastle United wrapped up their second deal of the summer on Friday in the shape of midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng on a free transfer, but still have plenty of work to do.

Manager Rafael Benitez needs to try build a squad capable of sustaining the club back in the top flight and that is why on area that must be improved over the summer is the options at centre-back.

Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles formed a great understanding at St James’ Park last season, but it could take an injury or a potential departure to derail the backline.

The Evening Standard have previously reported that Magpeis captain is being targeted by Chelsea and Tottenham, which is why Benitez needs a solid plan B.

Newcastle should consider turning their attention to Reading defender Liam Moore, who played every minute in the Championship last season and is a very consistent player.

Sky Sports report that Brighton have made an £8million bid as they look to sign the 25-year-old, but Benitez should attempt to hijack the move.

Moore has been very impressive at Championship level and now deserves a crack at the top flight with the best years of his career just around the corner.

He is a ball-playing centre-back that is confident with the ball at his feet and also an imposing figure that is strong in the air.

Moore is exactly the type of figure that could slot into Benitez’s side and is definitely good enough to even break into the starting XI if he hits the ground running.
