Tottenham are in the hunt to sign Inter Milan defender Danilo D’Ambrosio this summer, and could include fan favourite Mousa Dembele in any deal that potentially sees the Italy international head to North London, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed in their live transfer blog on Monday [10:55am] that Spurs are eyeing up a potential swoop for the 29-year-old Italian, but to get him, they may offer up Dembele, who is in the final year of his contract at the club.

D’Ambrosio can play anywhere across the backline, as demonstrated in a brilliant season at the San Siro last term when he made 34 appearances across all competitions, scored two goals and supplied four assists.

Good move for Tottenham?

D’Ambrosio is a good player.

His versatility would mean that he could add an extra layer of depth to Mauricio Pochettino’s first team squad.

However the Italy international’s primary position is at right-back, and with Kieran Trippier, Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters taking up that position, it’s unlikely that he would want to move to Spurs to be well down the pecking order.

Even if he was able to play at left-back, he would struggle with competition and he is perhaps weakest at centre-back, meaning he would not be a worthwhile signing.

D’Ambrosio would be a top signing for most clubs, just not for Spurs.

Likely to happen?

Unless Pochettino offloads Danny Rose and Serge Aurier, it’s hard to see this happening.

Rose has been linked with leaving North London for some time now but there has not been a lot of concrete reports this summer – yet.

The World Cup may be delaying that but even if Rose does go, Pochettino is likely to want a more natural left-back, not a right-footed player like D’Ambrosio.

It’s really hard to see this deal happening – especially with Dembele potentially being used as a makeweight.
