Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is the most likely player to be the next signing for Newcastle United, according to Football Whispers.

The football news site claims that Mignolet, 30, is well in the running to head to St James’ Park this summer after dropping down the pecking order at Anfield last season.

Football Whispers rates the likelihood of transfer rumours coming true out of five, and claims there is a 3.4 in 5 chance that the Belgium international will be the next arrival on Tyneside.

The Daily Star reports that the goalkeeper earns £60,000-a-week in his deal at Liverpool.

OPINION

It would be quite a shock for Newcastle to sign another goalkeeper this summer – especially one who made a name for himself at Sunderland. Mignolet is really not needed by the Magpies and it’s hard to see him winding up there this summer. Rafa Benitez will only have limited funds to spend due to Mike Ashley’s lack of financial backing, so he will surely only look to sign players that he needs. Newcastle already have their goalkeeping options sorted having signed Martin Dubravka on a permanent basis after his successful loan spell last season. Do they need Mignolet on top of that? Although the Belgian is more experienced in the Premier League, he would surely cost more and would not exactly please the fans to be signing an ex-Sunderland man who has been less than convincing at Anfield. Benitez needs to prioritise his search for a new centre-forward more than anything.
