Rangers midfielder Jason Holt has reportedly completed a temporary move to Joey Barton’s Fleetwood in England’s League One – but Steven Gerrard’s stance on the 25-year-old is puzzling to say the least.

The Daily Record has reported that Holt has joined Fleetwood on a season-long loan deal to reunite with his former team-mates Barton and Clint Hill at Highbury.

It is understood that Rangers manager Gerrard wanted him to stay as part of his squad for next season – which is somewhat of a bizarre idea from the Ibrox boss.

Gerrard has already signed two midfielders who could push Holt down the pecking order in Ovie Ejaria and Scott Arfield.

With Greg Docherty, Graham Dorrans and Ryan Jack also on the books in Govan, there’s basically no chance that Holt would be able to keep hold of his mainstay status that he earned under Graeme Murty.

In the 2017/18 season, Holt appeared 32 times across all competitions and did manage to impress in some of his games in fairness, as he scored two goals and supplied nine assists.

Gerrard is bound to continue making changes to the squad this summer, and the fact that he wanted to keep hold of what is now understood to be a League One midfielder, is odd to say the least.

Holt will surely do well at Fleetwood but it just shows how poor the Gers squad was last season that he was a mainstay but is only deemed good enough for the third-tier of football south of the border.

Players like that have no place at Rangers, and Gerrard should know that.
