Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Rangers are interested in signing Roma forward Umar Sadiq this summer, however he has ruled out the possibility of making moves for six other players that are linked with moves to Ibrox.

The Scottish Sun has reported that Sadiq could be within 24 hours of completing his loan move to the Glasgow giants to become Gerrard’s eighth signing since taking charge at the Scottish Premiership club.

“We’ve got an interest, but at the moment Sadiq is still a Roma player. It’s ongoing. We’ll have to see how that one materialises, but he’s someone we like,” said Gerrard, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

However the Gers manger has ruled out moves for a clutch of other players who have been linked with moves to Ibrox since he was appointed, among them being Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke.

“Brandon Barker is speculation. There’s not enough room for all the wingers we’ve been linked with — Ryan Kent, Harry Wilson, Barker and Jordan Jones,” he added.

“I don’t know how I’d fit them all in. I’m a fan of all the names, but it’s speculation. Dominic Solanke? Ben Woodburn? Also speculation. But we need more forward options.”

OPINION

Rangers’ summer business does appear to be slowing down now that the squad is back in pre-season training. Gerrard’s eight signings are hopefully going to help improve the squad and help them lay more of a challenge on Celtic for the Premiership title next season – or any other domestic cup for that matter. Sadiq looks as though he is going to be the next one snapped up but there should also be more movement on players leaving Ibrox soon. Even though the Gers have made seven signings – almost eight – they have not really got rid of that many players and there’s still a lot of deadwood in Govan that needs clearing out. One example is Eduardo Herrera. Sadiq’s arrival is really going to push him down the pecking order and it’s hard to see him staying put unless Gerrard has astonishingly offered him a bigger role next season. Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves are others, considering how many defensive additions Gerrard has made.
