Everton star Wayne Rooney has all but confirmed that his future lies away from Goodison Park following a Twitter message he sent out on the social media platform – and many fans have been saying the same thing by wishing him good luck.

The Toffees are yet to announce that a deal is complete but it looks to be just a matter of time judging by the message.

While sections of Blues supporters were keen to congratulate the 32-year-old on what they presumed was his farewell tweet, others were not as kind with their words.

The striker only returned to the club he began his career last summer, after seeing out his best years with Manchester United where he was a five-time Premier League title-winner, as well as successes in the Champions League and FA Cup.

It was for this reason that there were a few supporters who wished that Rooney could have returned to them earlier on in his career, rather than waiting till the very end.

It has not been an easy return for Rooney – only a couple of months into joining the club, Ronald Koeman was given his marching orders while his replacement, Sam Allardyce, also failed to impress in what ended up being a tumultuous season on the blue side of Merseyside.

In total, the 32-year-old made 111 appearances for Everton, scoring 26 goals as well as four assists.

Here is a selection of reactions from some supporters of the club in response to the player’s tweet, with the majority thanking him for his service:

Opinion

It should come as no surprise to see that Everton fans are wishing Rooney all the best as his exit edges ever closer, for he will always be remembered as one of the brightest young talents to don the blue of the Toffees. A boyhood Evertonian, there may well have been a sense of bitterness seeing him dazzle at Manchester United for so many years, and while there would have been delight over his return, he was by no means the same attacking threat as he once was, instead having to settle for a deeper role. Still, his one season gave the Goodison Park faithful a chance to see their former hero star one more time, and his exit will probably be best for all parties involved.
