Celtic must make it their priority to retain the services of Dedryck Boyata, as many fear he could be tempted by a move away from Parkhead.

The Belgium international has flashed in recent seasons, and has also looked the part in the Red Devils defence this summer at the World Cup, playing in place of an injured Vincent Kompany.

The Daily Record reported on their live transfer blog [07:38 am] that, although no official contact has been made from Lazio as of yet, there is interest in the player from Italy.

Celtic must offer the 27-year-old a new deal, as the Bhoys chances of retaining their domination of the Scottish Premier League, as well as their chances of pushing forward into the Champions League, are greatly boosted by Boyata’s presence.

Rodgers wants the Belgium international to stay, but the Boyata only has one year left on his current contract.

Although matching the what Lazio could offer may be out of reach to the Hoops, Rodgers should make handing a new deal to the Belgian an absolute priority.

Boyata was integral for the Hoops last season, playing in a whopping 39 games, helping to ensure 19 clean sheets during that time.

The prospect of playing without Boyata at centre-half next season must be a daunting one for Celtic, and the 27-year-old could just be another name that ‘Celtic couldn’t hold on to’.

However, an improved contract offer could be all that it takes to secure the Belgium international, as Celtic certainly are not short of trophies, and Champions League football is perennially played in Glasgow.

Retaining Boyata’s services must be a priority if this is to continue, and this would also represent a statement of intent from Rodgers, insisting he can keep his best players.
