Rangers’ potential capture of Slaven Belupo central defender Nikola Katic could prove to be one of the signings of the summer if he can be secured to lock up their leaky rearguard.

The Light Blues struggled at the back last season to contain even the weakest of attacks in the league but in a bid to solve that problem Sky Sports are reporting that a fee has been agreed for the Croatian.

With Ross McCrorie out for long spells and David Bates falling foul to injury late on in the campaign, the Gers back line was exposed brutally and eventually led to them dropping down to third in the table behind Aberdeen.

And now, with Bates departed to Hamburg there is no greater need for an arrival of a top quality centre-back to come in and steady the ship.

There has been a lot of positive talk about Katic from supporters who is just 21 and stands at a colossal six foot 3in (transfermarkt), and if he can reach his potential the Light Blues have one stunner of a player on their hands.

The Gers conceded 50 goals last term in the Scottish Premiership which is the worst defensive record in the top half of the table –  a factor that is clearly not good enough for a club the size of Rangers.

After finishing the season 12 points behind their great rivals Celtic, who themselves only conceded 25 goals, if Katic can come in and shore up the defence, the Light Blues will make up some of the ground on the Hoops as they launch their own pursuit on the title.
