Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has given the green light for ex-boss Graeme Murty to make a shock return to the club in his academy job just weeks after being sacked from his senior role, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish newspaper report that the club have agreed terms with Murty over a new deal at Ibrox and that he will step back into his position working with the youth teams.

His return will be viewed as a huge surprise by many of the Gers faithful after his ill-fated stint in the dugout, Gerrard his successor with the responsibility as full-time first team manager, having been axed from the role before the end of the last campaign.

Opinion

Well this is a turn up for the books. Many of the Light Blues supporters would have thought they had seen the last of Murty after his early exit from the manager’s job but he is back to take on the duties he held before being thrown in at the deep end at Ibrox. The decision to bring him back will likely have the fans divided down the middle, with some welcoming his return after an admirable effort, while others would want him to stay away, with the youth team still flourishing without his input. Either way, it seems as though Gerrard is impressed with what his predecessor has to offer, and he will be a helpful hand to have around, having picked up that experience of being in the dressing room and dugout with the current batch of players. It is not often a manager makes an immediate return to the club, but the Gers will be hoping he can continue the good work being done at the youth levels.
