Everton are in the hunt to sign midfield pass master Hector Herrera from Porto, according to CM Jornal.

The Portuguese sports website reports that Everton are in the race to land the Mexican World Cup star along with the likes of West Ham and Arsenal, who has just one year until his contract expires at the Liga NOS champions, having proven his attacking threat with five goals and seven assists last season.

The 28-year-old, who is impressing with his country in Russia, is also said to be the subject of interest from La Liga outfits Real Madrid and Real Betis, along with Serie A club Roma – but should the Toffees end up leading the race for the Mexican international, it is said that Porto could sell him for a cut-price fee of £13million.

Good move for Everton?

Yes, definitely. Everton could do with an experienced central midfielder in their ranks and Herrera fits the bill perfectly.

He has earned 66 caps for his country and has starred in all three of Mexico’s games so far at the World Cup, demonstrating he can be relied upon in important matches to provide stability to the midfield.

Boss Marco Silva’s side would be hugely bolstered by the likes of Herrera, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder if need be, displaying his versatility.

Likely to happen?

Yes, it is possible. However, other Premier League clubs are also keen on signing him, as well as the multiple Champions League winning side Real Madrid.

Herrera’s head may be turned by the Spanish giants compared to a team who finished in the top ten in the top-flight, so Everton will have to hope that they can be the ones to convince him to come to Merseyside.

The possibility of signing the Mexican will all rest on what Real Madrid decide to do.
