West Ham United are only willing to offer Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere a one-year deal as his move to the London Stadium looks in doubt, according to The Sun.

The newspaper report that Manuel Pellegrini is keen on a free transfer for the England international but the club are only willing to offer him an initial one-year contract amid doubts over his fitness.

The Sun claim that the deal would allow West Ham to assess the long-term viability of having Wilshere in the team, while also giving him the chance to prove his fitness to the club.

It is said that this development puts a move to east London in doubt for Wilshere, who is set to leave boyhood club Arsenal after 17 years.

Good move for West Ham?

Absolutely.

Wilshere is a brilliant midfielder with vast Premier League experience who would instantly inject some much-needed quality into the West Ham squad.

A free transfer makes a deal for the 26-year-old even more enticing, although his high wages mean that this would not be a cheap move for the Hammers.

A one-year deal would allow them to assess Wilshere’s return to fitness, and is an understandable move from the club after his well-documented injury problems.

Likely to happen?

It looks like West Ham’s desire to run the rule over Wilshere for a year before deciding on a long-term deal will put paid to their chances of signing him, and that is understandable.

The midfielder will not be short of offers this summer, and there will be other clubs in the mix who are willing to give him a more long-term deal.

However, Wilshere is reported to want to remain in London, and that could work out in the Hammers’ favour, with Crystal Palace and Fulham the only other likely destinations in the capital for the 26-year-old.
