World Cup fans have been tearing into Tottenham centre-back Davinson Sanchez following his display against Japan in Colombia’s 2-1 defeat in Russia on Tuesday afternoon.

The 22-year-old appeared to have been at fault with an error leading to the run-up to the decision to dismiss his international teammate Carlos Sanchez from the field of play in the third minute of the game which handed Shinji Kagawa the opportunity to take the lead for Japan from the spot and he duly put the Far East nation ahead.

Juan Quintero equalised for the South Americans shortly before the break to save the Spurs man’s blushes for the time-being.

However Yuya Osako’s header was enough to win the game for Japan in the 73rd minute.

Sanchez stepped up into Mauricio Pochettino’s first team last term following an injury to Toby Alderweireld but despite the Belgian making a comeback to full fitness the Spurs boss opted to keep with the Colombian.

There were occasions when Tottenham supporters felt the more highly experienced Alderweireld could have provided the cool-head and assuredness in the big games that are lacking from the younger defender’s game, believing that had they gone with the Belgian they would have perhaps stood a better chance of progressing in the Champions League and FA Cup.

Here is a selection of reactions from supporters taking in the World Cup clearly unimpressed with the Tottenham defender:
