Newcastle United are to battle it out with newly-promoted Fulham to land the signature of Swansea City striker Jordan Ayew, according to Football Ghana.

The Ghanaian football website reports that United have expressed an interest in signing the 5″9 (source: Transfermarkt) Ghanaian dazzler from recently relegated Swansea City as boss Rafa Benitez looks to bolster his strike force in time for next season.

However, Premier League rivals Fulham have already made a £8million bid for Swansea’s top scorer, which was rejected – meaning the Cottagers will now have to battle it out with Newcastle to land the centre-forward, who is now rated at £13million.

Good move for Newcastle?

Ayew was Swansea’s top scorer with 11 goals last season so it is no wonder Benitez is eager to add the Ghanian international to the Newcastle ranks.

He will boost their attacking threat, of which is low on numbers following the club’s quiet activity in this summer’s transfer window.

Newcastle desperately need new striking options and Ayew appears to fit the bill for a side looking to improve on their 10th place finish last season.

Likely to happen?

The likelihood of a transfer for Ayew happening imminently is low, as it seems Fulham will not retract the interest in the Ghanian.

Fulham will be seeking out options to help them survive in the Premier League, so they will not give up on Ayew easily – which will undoubtedly frustrate Newcastle as Benitez bids to make a big-name signing.

Newcastle need to make an offer that Fulham cannot match if they are to snap up Ayew, otherwise they will see another one of their targets slip through their fingers yet again.
