The fans at Newcastle United might argue over where they need to strengthen the most this summer, but you would find few who would name the midfield as their priority.

With a lack of proven centre forward and a lack of depth in both the wing and full back positions, Rafael Benitez has his work cut out heading into the summer, not least because he is working on a shoestring budget under owner Mike Ashley.

It means that the Spaniard will likely have to prioritise his signings and spend savvy throughout the summer, putting more of his limited pool of cash into the areas which need the most attention.

As such, it will come as a huge shock to the Newcastle faithful to hear that the former Liverpool boss is chasing a midfielder this summer, although, as revealed by the Chronicle’s Chris Waugh, not former Arsenal man Oguzhan Ozyakup.

Newcastle already have four central stars who all featured regularly last season; Jonjo Shelvey, Mohamed Diame, Mikel Merino and Isaac Hayden, and while there have been rumours surrounding the futures of the quartet, none seem particularly likely to go.

However, the hunt for a new midfielder changes that, and spells trouble for Hayden.

Newcastle might well be looking for a more attack minded player who can use technique and vision to create goal scoring opportunities, but it does not stop the defensive midfielder from being thrown into the firing line.

The 23-year-old was usurped by Diame as the chosen ball winner and with funds tight, a new midfielder means the former Arsenal man is the most expendable, with his game time set to suffer further.

With Premier League experience under his belt, his stock will have risen significantly and the Magpies will be able to make a healthy profit which will contribute to the transfer kitty at Benitez’s disposal.

It is not good news for Hayden, and he faces a fight on his hands to try and convince the Spaniard he is still worthy of a place at St James’ Park.
