Olsen interest shows Liverpool are desperate

Liverpool have already been linked with several goalkeepers this summer as their search to replace Loris Karius continues, and the latest name on the list suggests that the Anfield club are growing desperate in their attempts to bring in a new number one.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, the Reds are in the hunt to sign Sweden international stopper Robin Olsen this summer.

It is said that Liverpool have joined Roma and Napoli in the race for the 6ft 6in giant, who impressed during Sweden’s opening World Cup win over South Korea.

The 28-year-old is coming off another impressive season for Danish side FC Copenhagen, and is now the latest name on Liverpool’s long list of potential candidates.

However, it is hard to see exactly why the club are considering a move for him this summer.

The colossus is a decent goalkeeper, there is no doubting that.

In 100 appearances for Copenhagen he has kept 45 clean sheets, which is a massively impressive record for a shot stopper anywhere in the world.

But, at 28 years old, Olsen is yet to play anywhere other than Sweden, Denmark or Greece, and has therefore never been tested at the highest level.

For him to make the step up to become the number one goalkeeper at a club like Liverpool is a massive jump, and one that would surely be too much of a risk for the Reds to take.

Liverpool need to be bringing in a world-class goalkeeper, someone who can come in and immediately slot in to that position with no issues at all.

Olsen is most definitely not at that level, and the Reds may as well stick with someone like Karius if they are to half-heartedly chase figures like the Sweden international.

Their interest in him does in turn suggest that the club are becoming desperate in their attempts to bring in a new number one, with Alisson and Jan Oblak seemingly unmoved by their interest.

It is a worrying sign for Liverpool fans, and it is something that may come back to haunt them next season.
